Father, Son Basketball Camp Brings Out the Best at Hoop Group Skills Camp

Greetings Hoop Groupers,

My name is Alex Popp and I am the new co-director for Hoop Group Skills camps.

I spent my youth attending Hoop Group camps and tournaments. I went on to play high school basketball at Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) and then received a scholarship to play at the University of Minnesota and Assumption College. I was fortunate enough to play in the NCAA (D1) March Madness tournament in 2005 and the Division II Sweet 16 in 2008.

Following my college playing days, I got the coaching bug and began teaching the game we all love.

I began coaching with Xpressions AAU grassroots program based out of Rhode Island/Massachusetts. The Xpressions program has produced over 30 Division I players from 2008-2010. A lot of player’s exposure came from competing in Hoop Group Jam Fest tournaments in the spring and summer.

In 2010 I took a coaching position at Springfield College while acting as the Director of Basketball Operations with the Springfield Armor (NBA D-League). I got the chance to work with players like Scottie Reynolds (Villanova) and Craig Brackins(76ers). Parallel with my coaching duties in the past three years, I achieved my masters in Sport Management at Springfield College.

As of May 30th, I came back to where it all began at Hoop Group Skills camp. Working for Hoop Group has been phenomenal thus far.

A picture from this past weekend at Father/Son Camp at Hoop Group Skills Camp Grounds in the Pocono Mountains. Does it get any better than this?

I get to coach the game I love and I am surrounded by basketball geniuses 24/7. What more could I ask for?

Well, there is more; I get to do all of my coaching and teaching in the scenic Pocono Mountains, and if you haven’t seen our facilities- please check them out on our Facebook page. The campgrounds are GORGEOUS!

I have now been involved with two camps this season: Junior Elite and Father/Son weekend, 1. This past weekend was the first of three Father/Son weekends (Summer ’11) and it was a special experience. Coaching both fathers and sons were great, but teaching the Dads on their approach to teaching their own sons was the ultimate! The amount of passion and energy on the campgrounds last weekend was off-the-charts, and I am thoroughly looking forward to Father/Son weekends in the future (July 22-24 & August 12-14).

Give us a call at 570-992-6343 if you have any questions about the Hoop Group Skills camps!

Thank you very much,

Coach Alex Popp
