MONMOUTH LANDS BIG FISH IN LUCY THOMAS

Yesterday Monmouth University, made some noise on the recruiting front. It was the kind of noise that everyone hears and goes…what was that? In this case it was Monmouth University getting its first true local superstar to stay at home…junior LUCY THOMAS GAVE MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY A VERBAL COMMITMENT.

In recent years Monmouth University has not been in the mix of  recruiting the shore elite. Some believed the best girls basketball conference in America was not a priority for Monmouth U. It seemed almost every Shore superstar was signing at other schools. The name Monmouth rarely came up in the recruiting process. Monmouth has had a few shore players; KC Chambers was a Stephanie Gaitley recruit who decided to attend Monmouth after Gaitley moved to Fordham. She lasted all of 2 years at Monmouth, only to move on and become one of the  best point guards in the Ivy League. She helped U Penn to an Ivy Title and win in the NCAA tournament. Chambers was well respected by all and hero to many of the shore babies. No question it raised red flags for a player who dreamed of only playing for Monmouth to leave the school. Then Sara Olson who became a team captain and leading scorer for Monmouth after transferring from NJIT. But the Monmouth staff had to be convinced to take Olson initially. While she had a great two year run, the truth is it almost never happened.  Finally Dana Carbone (Donovan catholic) was the only high school player that MU has signed prior to last night. This spotty Monmouth record had clearly not won over the shore elite and it appeared not to be improving much. That is until last night, when Monmouth pulled off maybe the biggest heist in years. They finally got a true Shore Conference elite type player in Lucy Thomas.  The 6ft former Freshman of the Year from St Rose.

DSC4122 Thomas is the big fish that has eluded Monmouth.

The Monmouth University staff did what all programs do when trying to get to the next level. They stole a player a better than their level. They got in early, developed a relationship with the player and most importantly closed the door on the competition. Make no mistake Lucy Thomas is an Atlantic 10 type player. She is a player that in two years, would have been on most mid major plus recruiting list. There is a real case to be made that Thomas could be a high major player in two years as well as the best post player in the state. Monmouth has NEVER signed a player from the state with this type of name recognition or talent.

Lucy Thomas is not only a mega talent but has expanded her game under the watchful eye of Joe Whalen. When Thomas arrived at St. Rose last year, she was strictly a box player. In less than a year, Joe Whalen has turned Thomas into one of the best…IF NOT THE BEST, post shooting big man. Lucy Thomas ability to score and use her body are special. But here is something that most don’t know….Luci Thomas really should be just a rising sophomore. Folks Thomas is a year younger than her class. Now that my friends is something that should scare every team in the MAAC, because her upside is something that nobody can put a ceiling on.

St. Rose and Joe Whalen are now producing not only D1 players but studs. The roster is now full of players who will be moving on to the D1 basketball world. They have no less than 4 other D1 players on their roster right now. Loving Marsicano has D1 offers as does Mikayla Markham and both are underclassmen. There is no question Joe Whalen has turned St. Rose into a major stop on the recruiting circuit for college coaches. There also is no doubt Monmouth is building a relationship with the Joe Whalen and St. Rose. Who is to say Thomas will not be the last Blue Chip shore recruit for Monmouth. How big was this signing for Monmouth? Well when every D1 baby walks up to at camp today and says “Hey did you hear about Luci Thomas?” you know that Monmouth has just kicked in the door. No longer can anyone, myself included, question if Monmouth seriously wants shore kids. The Monmouth staff has now created a relationship with one of the most talented programs in the state. Now Monmouth can restore and build new relationships with the Shore elite. This is a grand opportunity for Head Jen Palmateer and her staff to re-boot their Shore recruiting. Lucy Thomas just may be the player long remembered that started the ball rolling for Monmouth U. There is no question she is a game changer for many reasons and this verbal may have an impact for years to come.

JENNY PALMATEER MONMOUTH WOMENS HEAD COACH IS ALL SMILES

I remember the first time I saw Lucy Thomas and I think reading these two articles(at the end of the blog) I wrote, will remind people that Luci Thomas came from almost nowhere. There is no question if she played the entire season this year, she would’ve been a 1st or 2nd team ALL SHORE. Her performance against SJV in the SCT was breath taking for those who have forgotten. 15 points, 13 rebounds and 5 dimes against the best front line in the state. A front line that featured 3 D1 players and a Top 50 player in the country.  Her soft hands and quite approach make her appear way beyond her years. I think it safe to say Lucy Thomas over the next 2 years will be one of the best players in all of New Jersey. While Monmouth University has caught the attention of everyone in the shore. CONGRATS TO LUCY THOMAS AND MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY.
