THE BIG PICTURE…COLLEGES THEY HAVE ATTENDED

A story worth remembering….
In Caitlin’s (Hyduke) era, my wife and I probably saw about 110 of his 598 wins. There were a lot of big ones. Four of them were CJ Sectional titles. One of them, in 2006, capping off Caitlin’s senior year, her career, and her Shore Conference Player of the Year / Kerwin Award season, was a win over River Dell, for the Group II State Championship. That was George’s third state title overall, and second Group II title, winning a Group I in 1996 and a Group II in 2002, with Chrissy Fisher, previously. 2006 was special. He earned a well-deserved Coach of the Year Award that year, to go with Caitlin’s POY, a year he took his first ever trip to the Shore Conference Tournament Championship game, a rarity for a small public school.

State titles are nice. In true Shore Conference fashion, though, some of the biggest wins are closer to home, such as beating rivals RBC and SJV, twice, in the same year in 2006. In the second RBC win, on their floor, in the old gym, down three points with 5 seconds left in regulation, Caitlin took an inbounds pass, weaved through defenders the length of the floor to the arc, right in front of George, and drained a buzzer beater to send the game into overtime.

He told me that night he knew it was going in when it left her hand. Her quote in the Press the next day said she knew it was going in when it left her hand. And in the photo of her shooting that shot, you can see the ball barely out of her hands, George standing right behind her, a smile on his face, and his arms straight up in the air indicating a three well before it went in! Some moments are just magical and that was one.
He still talks about that shot. You can be talking to him in the NEW RBC gym, and he will still walk over and put his toe on the spot behind the arc where she took that shot from in the OLD RBC gym. That’s a side of George Sourlis not many people see.

“Congratulation to Coach Sourlis on win number 600.
George’s teams are always well prepared all season long. He instills a discipline and a toughness that can be seen when we watch his players during the AAU season, outside his ‘care’. It takes a special coach to have longevitiy in this business and being successful certainly helps. Rumson players know that not only do they have a coach that wants to help them be the best the can be off the court, he cares just as much about them off the court.”
