This is a big weekend for any girl hoping to play college basketball at the highest level. It is the only weekend Div 1 colleges are allowed to watch players in an AAU event. This week is kind of a last look for many seniors. This is a chance for them to showcase there talent in front of schools who have either missed out on top recruits or schools who have made changes in their recruiting plans. This is also a very important time for juniors. This is the time were many schools will decide if they what to offer a player in the spring or even more important miss valuable practice time during their season by going to watch a Junior play during her high school season. This is very important to colleges as they can’t be everywhere and only have a limited number of days they can be off campus. Letting juniors know they want them is important and nothing signals that more than hand written letters and appearances at there games. The weekend will be the end of the road for many with big dreams and the start for others. Many will hope for big seasons to put them on the radar. Some will move on to div 2 and 3 schools and others will play they last season of organized basketball. I wish the best for all trying to reach their goals.

Speaking of AAU basketball!  When in the world is somebody going to get a grip on what is going on? Recently I have heard of AAU team’s practicing in the fall. In fact I know of an AAU team that practiced in the middle of a player’s season last year! People this is just flat out crazy. I understand a tourney to get ready for the college coaches viewing period. But to have kids practicing and playing weekend tournaments in the fall is shameful. After 100 games in the summer don’t these kids need a break? Players this time of year should be working on their skills and preparing for their high school season. This is a great time of year for high school teams to bond. They play in their fall league, lift weights and spend time getting to know each other. Why do some AAU coaches feel what they are doing is more important than the High School Team. This time of year is when some AAU coaches are at there worst as well. I had a young lady at NBS this weekend and an AAU coach was calling her all during her workout.  He told her she needed him in order to improve her game that she was also playing for the wrong AAU team. Meanwhile this girl plays for a high school coach who has sent more girls to the Div 1 level maybe than any coach in the state. I understand a tourney or a few practices is needed to get ready for the NCAA viewing period. But Practice twice a week for 2 or 3 weeks, then 3 tournaments? I even know of kids skipping open gyms with college coaches to go play in a tourney. Yes they think playing AAU with no coaches is better than playing in front of college coaches. The fact is the AAU coaches simply pressure them to play in these tournaments. They convince the player they have their best interest at heart. Recently a player told me they were being recruiting by a top 25 program. I asked this player who told them this? She said “my aau coach says they are going to offer me” I called the coach who happened to have played for me in college. He simply said that was not true!  I hope high school coaches will find a way to get more control of their players in the off season. There are many great AAU coaches, but many just don’t understand what the role of AAU is! The role of an AAU coach is to help a player to get better during the off season and to help a player get as much exposure as possible. This must be done without disrupting the high school team’s preparing before and during the season. Many great AAU programs and coaches are labeled because of a few bad apples! This has to change!

Updates

Theresa Manigrasso- verbally committed to St. Peters College. St. Peters will be getting a battle tested warrior. She will defend, make shots and most important be a team player. This is a kid who came off the bench last year and had no complaints. This is a kid who did all the little things. There is no doubt she will have a big year. By the way the Manigrasso Parents….They are a coach’s dream! I have watched them from a distance support for their daughter and the SJV program was number 1 on there agenda first and always. Not easy when you think your daughter is a special player. If you don’t mind me saying so….I predicted last year she would be a Div 1 player…

Kristen Sharkey-verbally committed to the University of Buffalo. This is a steal for Buffalo. This is the hardest player to stop in the shore conference. She has now added three point shooting to her game. Many Jersey schools moved on her too late. In the end Miss Sharkey had more than her share of choices, in the end Buffalo who lost out on Danella two years ago hit pay dirt.

Christa Evans of Jackson is now a top recruit for Rutgers University. There is no doubt that Hall of Fame Coach Stringer will try and land the 6’3’ honor Student.

Speaking of new kids on the block….Do not be surprised if these players have monster seasons and end up on my Danielle Pankey I get no media love team….Liz West of Shore regional…. Kathryn Campbell of Wall … and then my sleeper of the year Lauren Romeo of Pt Beach.. These are players I really feel can have big seasons and improve their recruiting stock!

Victoria Lesko of Rumson is becoming the darling of the fall for a number of college coaches. They like here size and ability to score, the 6’2” junior’s stock grows everyday. Lesko, who sat out last year with a foot injury, is a sweet shooting forward, who if she listens to the lessons of George Soulias will become a force in the Shore!

INTERESTING NEWS/

Both of Colt’s Neck starting forwards Brittney Howe’s and Emily Laurence are coming off injuries. Howe’s has been in a boot and Emily Laurence who I believe may be other Div 1 player for the Shore Conference had ACL surgery. Both should recover before the season starts.

KC Cambers of St. Rose ran for the first time last week and looked great. She will more than likely be 100% for the season

I had a chance to see Michaela Mabrey of Manasquan last week and she looked very happy and ready to play. The new found energy surrounding the Manasquan program could be felt through out the gym. The US HOOPS family was also out in full support. The Manasquan program is no doubt moving in the right direction. Manasquan AD Ron Kornegay may have pulled off the move of the summer! There seems to be a different feel surrounding this program. By the way the Rutgers coaching staff  went to watch Michaela play open gym and liked what they saw…so what else is New…the kid is the real deal!

Its official Don Hampton will now be an asst coach at Colts’ Neck. This gives this program a huge edge. Remember, this is a guy who has been on the AAU scene for a long time. He will know the strengths and weakness of many players in the Shore Conference. Then remember this. When does Brooke Hampton play her best basketball…You got it! When she is playing with her dad… I will make a bold statement right now….Brooke Hampton Could wind up being the player of the year in the entire state!!!!..

Chyna Golden has been released by Red Bank and now is ready to play at Neptune. RBC and Joe did the right thing to allow this young lady to move forward. The family believes she belongs at Neptune for reasons that go way beyond basketball. Chyna’s mom was very respectful and thankful for Joe’s support and understanding. It’s been a tough few months for Chyna who lost her grandfather and with all the changes it has been difficult…hang in there Chyna; you have a lot of friends.

In fall basketball all the talk was about Neptune freshman Ivy Washington. The freshman’s play against SJV was nothing short of sensational according to many sources.

Rumson blew out Colts Neck that did not have their entire player…can someone tell me what the point of playing a fall league when one team does not bring there available varsity players. If you want to look at your young players do it in practice at open gym. The teams who pay to play against varsity players are short changed in games where the score is 62-14… as was the case in the Rumson/Colt’s Neck game.

Ocean Township lost a lot of talent but looked very good the other night at Hoop Group fall league.

PRE-SEASON PICKS

Monday, September 7th, 2009

A New Year and The Shore Conference is clearly the capital of girl’s basketball. The conference is blessed with great coaching, great players, and wonderful rivalries. There is only one way to stir up fun and get people debating! Start listing who is the best at anything. So today I will give you my Pre-season All Conference Teams and then I will throw out a few items for debate. No doubt I will get lots of feedback; this should get your juices flowing until the season kicks inJ

Pre season predictions don’t mean a lot. It’s more about fun and makes for good discussion than anything else. I for example did not see many players that improved this summer. So a lot is based on reputation than who really has made the biggest steps toward having a big season..

My All Pre-season Shore Teams are based on three things.

 1. What type of season did the player have last year?

 2. How did the player finish their season last year?
 3. What type of summer did the player have?
 4. Did I see them play recently?

My Pre-Season All Shore teams-(players are not listed in order)

Player of the year- Shakena Richardson

She is now rated as one of the top pt guards in America

First Team

Kirsten Sharkey –Sr- Southern High School

The best returning post player in the Shore Conference. She may be the only player in the conference that can win games on her own.

Christa Evans-Jr- Jackson Memorial High School –

What a summer! She may be the best Jr. Post player in the state. What would have happened last year if she didn’t get hurt?

Lauren Clarke-Sr- Colts Neck

If this is possible, she is underrated. How can I not pick her as my pre-season player of the year? What more does this kid have to do?

Brooke Hampton-Sr- Colts Neck

She is healthy and coming off a great summer. This could be the year Brooke puts it all together. With her dad on the sideline, she may reach heights no one could imagine.

Jackie Kates-Jr- SJV
Jackie is the ultimate pt guard, who makes everyone around her a better player. Then she had a summer for all summers…college coaches can only dream of having her in there lineup one day!

The second Team is SCARY. Every player on my second team will play Division One basketball

The Pre-Season Second Team

Sam Clark-Soph- St Rose
To think she is a sophomore is frightening. I would list the schools who want her services, but we’d be here a couple of days! The best passing, shooting and defense post player in the Shore Conference. Why is she not first team? I don’t like underclassmen….lol

Megan McGuinness-Jr- Middletown South
Maybe the most improved player in the state. A monster summer has elevated her status among college coaches. Helped the Central Jersey Hawks win the JR. Nationals as she was the leading scorer in the championship game. Last year’s SCT performance was just the start. First team before the season ends?

Missy Repoli –Jr- SJV-
The best shooter the Shore Conference has to offer. Who has hit more big shots than Missy? With the lost of Linney her numbers will get even better. Missy has been good for so long at times she seems to be forgotten.

Stephanie Cardamone-Sr- Freehold Township
Stephanie Signed with Bryant University and no longer is under the radar. She is the hardest worker in the Shore Conference. She forced the media to see her talent. Look for her to go out with a bang!

Davis-Jr-Neptune High School
May be the most talented player in the shore! Now if she wins player of the year who would be shocked? What I find shocking is a Big East; ACC future guard is on second team.

My third team could beat the second team…lets play a game and fine outJ All five are Div 1 players…

The Pre-season Third Team

Aaron Zimmeram –Jr- SJV High School
The recruiting war has already begun..A-10 schools and MAC School’s are already in the mix. This 6ft forward future div 1 small forward will step into the spotlight this year.

Sara Olsen-Jr-Howell High School
Never heard of her? Ask the college coaches! Under the radar at Howell. The Media will miss her but the coaches won’t! She can knock down three’s or post up.

Machaela Mabrey-Soph-Manasquan High School
Don’t forget about her, she will play for a top 20 college team one day. She may help jump start the Manasquan program. We know her statistics will be gaudy but if she can help Squan have a winning season, she must move up on this list?

Chyna Golden-Jr- Neptune High School
She makes Neptune the pre-season number one team in the state! A post player who can score and rebound in traffic. The next two years may see her become a major force in the Shore Conference.

Semonyeh Allen-Sr-Neptune
Now how can a Div 1 player be 3rd team all shore?  She makes shots, rebounds, and plays defense. She is quietly becoming one of the best swing players in the Shore Conference.

My 4th team would be many counties first team.

The Pre-Season 4th Team

KC Hobbie-Jr -Red Bank Catholic
Back for a full year! How many players can be effective scoring at two positions?

Ashley Cooper-Jr- RFH
Will she be the next RFH star? Rumor is some Big East schools have an interest. I can’t wait to get a look at her.

Allison Sweeney-Sr- St Rose
She has helped St. Rose become a power in the shore. Now Div 1 schools are finding out how good she is.

Alexx Hall- Sr- St. Rose
Wow St. Rose is good! Remember the show Hall put on in the SCT.

…. let the debates begin.

Now let’s talk about the ranking

Here is my Pre-Season Ranking.

1. NEPTUNE

2. ST. JOHNS. VIANNEY

3. ST. ROSE
4. COLTS NECK
5. JACKSON

Now here is how I got to my top 5 team

1.) Neptune is the defending champs and added Chyna Golden
.
2)  SJV is still one of the most talented teams in the state (4 div 1 players on their roster)

3.) St. Rose Beat Colts Neck in the SCT. They return an older wiser team. They also have less of a bench; gone will be the mass subbing. This will lead to better chemistry.

4.) CN getting a new coach, losing John Turhan , now throw in Emily Lawrence being injured and you have a wait and see attitude at Colts Neck to start the year. This is either going to a dream year or a nightmare. Remember this team loses nobody from a team that lost in ths state championship game!

5.) Jackson has Rachel Goodale, Christa Evans and a great backcourt.

Five Players you can’t live without

KC Chambers of St. Rose- SR has no other true pt guard. She does the little things that only coaches see!

Amanda Yaccarino-RFH- RFH’s heart and soul. The warrior every RFH team needs, this young lady gets better every year. If Rumson has a great year, it could start right here with Yaccarino. Paige Armstrong reinvented!

Liz West- Shore- Not Flashy but could be this years Kirsten Sharkey. This young lady will be the most talked about player before the year is over! My choice for the Danielle Pankey award (I get no media love award)

Costello-Jackson- The toughest guard I saw ALL Summer. An all Shore type player. People this kid is good and makes Jackson a special team. I was shocked how well she played this summer!

Sam Guastella-RBC- Now she will be the RBC go to player in the post. She could end up being the best post player in the shore before it’s all said and done…only time will tell.

Which freshman will have the best year? Here are a few to think about..

Kelly Hughes-Pt BoroHigh School-
She is very special. No way can she live up to expectations. Pt Boro becomes a must stop for all college coaches. Let me say that again. Pt Boro” a must stop”…who would believe this! Get your tickets early!

Ivy Washington- Neptune High School

She can do it all! This is just wrong. Now get this. She will get playing time this year. Neptune is getting a player many think is the best freshman in the Shore.

Mary Kate Calverly-RBC High School
The talent keeps rolling in. RBC happy days are here again! This hard working young lady has great passing skills and a wonderful feel for the game. Now remember she is very competitive player. Joe has a lot of talented guards. Why do I get the feeling he is smiling like the cat that ate the canary?

Stephanie Mason- Jackson Memorial
She may be the missing piece to a well balanced team. She can shoot three’s, rebound and is fearless. Rachel Goodale is a teacher and Stephanie will grow quickly into one of the best swing players in the Shore

Tara Inman – Holmdel High School
A guard with size and skills an impact freshman. How good is she? Don’t be surprised if she is the Shore Conference most talked about freshman before the year is over!  Toughness and leadership skills are already [art of her package! I expect her to challenge for a starting spot right out of the gate.

Now tell me who is missing? What freshman is under the radar? She is out there

Somewhere!!

Lets Talk’s Coaches now…Who do you think is the best coach in the Jersey Shore? Let’s Take King George Soulias out the mix.  I have a few names to start the debate with, that I’m sure will take hours!…..

WHO IS THE BEST COACH?

Dawn Kappell-SJV- Who has handled the pressure of expectations better than Dawn? Winning with talent is not easy. Plus she already has a state Championship under her belt.

John Turhan-Central- Now he will try and build a third program. Some may call him the Bill Parcells of the Shore Conference. If he turns Central around, does that make him the best?

Tom Brennan-Middletown South- He does more with less than anyone on this list. How does this guy kept wining year in and year out in the Shore Conference loaded with talent? Plus he never dodges anyone. Question? Have you ever seen his team unprepared?

Joe Montana-RBC- He has built RBC into the Yankees of the Shore. Can you think of a coach less appreciated? The guy just wins and wins. Now ask yourself this question? Name a coach that has more pressure on him year in and year out?

Rachel Goodale-Jackson Memorial- The young exciting Coach has turned Jackson into a player in the Shore Conference. She is rolling with the big boys and all the kids believe in her….me too!

John Brown- Neptune- Who said Neptune couldn’t play discipline basketball? He won the SCT and will start the year number 1 in the state. How can you doubt his creditably? Now remember how he kept his team under the radar last season? The man has no ego and has turned Neptune into the most stable program in the Shore Conference these days!

Now let me hear your choices….who do you think is the best? They don’t have to be on this list!

On Deck- My next blog is a very important one. Male AAU coaches and why are so many men getting College Head Coaching Jobs over women?

When leaving comments on my Blog you do not need to leave your name! Just kept it clean and fun!
