Kansas Lands 4 Star Silvio De Sousa

Kansas has landed a commitment from IMG Academy’s Silvio De Sousa today. In what appears to be a bit of a shocking get for the Jayhawks, De Sousa chose the Jayhawks shortly after his visit. Maryland, Louisville and LSU were others in the race to land De Sousa, a 6’8 freak athlete, known for making highlight reel plays. Kansas was later than most to offer De Sousa a scholarship offer, only extending on this past Spring. But as Matt Tait wrote, his visit to Kansas put them over the top.

“When I was there in Kansas, I couldn’t even express myself or how I was feeling,” De Sousa told the Journal-World after his commitment.

There’s no denying Kansas’s lineage as one of college basketball’s premier programs. Phogg Allen Fieldhouse is a special place, and the stories surrounding it are never-ending. It was this rich history, combined with the rest of the campus and formal meeting with the KU coaching staff, that led De Sousa to Kansas.

During his tenure at Kansas, Bill Self has had a knack for developing big men. Cole Aldrich and Joel Embiid are the most notable to grow from Self’s coaching, becoming NBA lottery picks. But also look at players like Landen Lucas, Sasha Kaun, Darnell Jackson, even Perry Ellis, who were not major recruits, but developed into key pieces to any success the Jayhawks would have.

Self’s history with post players makes Kansas the perfect fit for De Sousa, who while being a massive body with an insane vertical leap, still has some developing to do in his post game. While his overall game will be a work in progress, you can bet that there will be a baseline lob play in the cards when De Sousa suits up for real at KU.
