Matt Latka is looking to lead Ramapo to a big season

Ramapo High School will face off against St. Joseph’s Metuchen for the final game of the Hoop Group Tip-Off Showcase. Class of 2016 wing Matt Latka will assume a lot of the leadership this season. He sees a lot of potential in his team this year.

As a team, we have been the Big North Freedom Division champs for the last 3 years,” Latka said. “Our goal this year is to be champions of the league, the county, and the state Group 3. We want to be the team no one looks forward to playing and also one that makes Coach Gary smile more often!”

He has been very busy this offseason and focused a lot on his development as a player.

Personally, I worked on my overall game during the spring and summer with the Wayne PAL-AAU team,” he said. “I played in the Jersey City Hamilton Park League during the summer and the Playaz Fall Ball League with the Ramapo High School team. I spent time working out with trainers such as J.R. Inman, Ben Allen, Kent Culuko and Tariq Robinson. As a team, we have been preparing for this year through our off-season workouts with our volunteer Coach Gary Sandberg, attending a team camp at Hoop Group, team strength and endurance workouts with Rich Sadiv at Parisi’s.”

Latka believes hard work as well other factors to this season will determine their success as a team.

The key for a successful season will be defined by our play on the court and being the last team in the gym come next March,” said the Ramapo wing. “Hopefully all our hard work and dedication will pay off. Coach Joe Sandberg always talks about believing in yourself and putting in the time with hard work. He has a lot of faith in us playing at a very high level this year and we agree.”

The senior wing is looking forward to playing one of the best high school teams in the state in St. Joseph’s Metuchen at the Tip-Off Showcase.

“The Hoop Group Tip-Off Showcase is a great opportunity for us to start off the season against one of the best teams in the state,” he said. “It’s a chance for us early on to show we can compete against the best. We are pumped and honored to get the invite!”
