Last season, the Toronto Raptors were a bit of a surprise to the NBA, finishing with an overall record of 48-34, winning the Atlantic Division and clinching the third overall seed in the Eastern Conference. Now, just a week before the All-Star break, it is no surprise to anyone that they are back atop the Atlantic Division, with an overall record of 35-17. They hold a 13 game lead over the second place Nets and this includes playing a stretch period without one of their top players, 2014 all-star, DeMar DeRozan.

One of the biggest factors to the franchise’s success over the past two seasons comes from the rising status of point guard Kyle Lowry. The eight year veteran is catapulting himself into an elite category in the NBA. He currently leads the Raptors in scoring at 19.8 points per game. He also averages 7.3 assists per game; that is double the second highest APG. Add to that almost five rebounds a game (4.8) and nearly two steals (1.6) and it’s no surprise he was selected to his first career all-star game. Not only will he be playing, but he will start for the East, nudging Dwayne Wade for the second guard position.

Lowry is just the fifth Raptor to be selected to play third player in team history to be voted to the game by the fans. Former Raptor and Hoop Group alum, Chris Bosh, and Antonio Davis are the other two to be voted in.

Lowry’s All-Star game campaign really took off when singer Justin Bieber took to Twitter to offer his support for Lowry. Joining Lowry in the backcourt is fellow Hoop Group Alum John Wall.

The NBA All-Star Game will take place at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, February 15th at 8:30 pm.
