One on One: Interview with Daniel Mading

A few months ago, very few knew the name Daniel Mading. A huge summer however, has helped the rising sophomore explode onto the recruiting scene. One of the reasons Mading was relatively unknown was his foreign background. Mading is a native of Perth, Australia, but is apart of the Beyond Belief Program, a program whose mission is to “promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness within a diverse society through the use of sports.”

From a physical standpoint, Mading is listed at 6’9, but do not make the mistake of comparing him to fellow Australian and NBA center Andrew Bogut; the two have very different games despite a similar height. While Mading does have impressive length to play with his back to the basket, he also possesses athleticism that will help him thrive on the wing. Couple that with the endless motor that he showed last week at Future All-American Camp, as well as his ability to take the ball coast to coast after hauling in a rebound, and you have a player with unlimited potential.

Mading wasted no time grabbing the attention of various scouts and media groups that attended Future All-American Camp. The Aussie impressed all week and showed how big of a recruit he can be. He exhibited great versatility, and is able to do many things on offense, including driving to the hoop in the half court, running the floor and finishing in transition and even displayed a promising mid range jump shot. Defensively he is long enough and athletic enough to be a good rebounder, pesky defender outside and shot alterer at the rim.

Mading capped off his week with a ten point performance in a star studded Super Sophomore All-Star Game. We sat down with the all-star and talked to him a little about his game and his excitement about attending The Rock School, in Gainesville, Florida next year. See the interview here:
