LONG BRANCH – St. Joseph’s Metuchen jumped out quickly and routed Neptune 82-41 in the third game of the Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase at Long Branch High School.
The Falcons (8-2), led by a combined 58 points from Karl Towns, Wade Baldwin IV and Marques Townes, grabbed an 8-0 lead out of the gate and finished the first quarter up 22-9.

“Fortunately we got out to a good start,” St. Joe’s coach David Turco said. “I feel we got better defensively in the second half, giving up only 7 points in the third.”

Along with the defensive improvements, St. Joe’s showcased a solid transition game which at times made in difficult for the Fliers (2-5), playing without Keith Kirkwood, to keep up.

“It was a little disappointing for us playing them without Kirkwood because you come to showcases to play teams at their full strength and Neptune is a quality team,” said Turco. “But for us, at this point, it’s a matter of trying to build team chemistry in order to accomplish the goals we have.”

One of those goals will be trying to avenge their opening night 58-54 loss to East Brunswick on January 17 when they face the Bears for the second time this season.

“Our chemistry is building,” said Baldwin, who netted 18 points and shared team MVP honors with Towns. “We hang out together all the time. We are definitely learning to play better together.”

Towns finished with a game-high 23 points while Shakeem Richardson scored a team-high 19 points to lead Neptune.
