Business As Usual for St. Anthony’s 66th Straight Win

WEST ORANGE, NJ– For the 13th time St. Anthony’s took the court at the Tip-Off Hoop Group Showcase. And for the 13th time the Friars left the court victorious.

Behind 17 points from senior Josh Brown, who will be Temple-bound upon graduation, the Friars (1-0) defeated the Neptune Scarlett Fliers (1-1) in the fourth game of the day at West Orange High School.

Even though the outcome was never in doubt, the Friars sprinted out to a 22-5 first-quarter lead, it didn’t mean coach Bob Hurley wasn’t a little nervous before the opening tip.

“Normally it’s (the Showcase game) our second game of the year,” Hurley said. “We always have a good opponent and the atmosphere is always really charged. This was one we were really nervous about because we hadn’t had a game before this. We just wanted to get the lights off and see what we got.”

One of the things the Friars found out they had was a very intimidating backcourt. In addition to Brown, senior Halice Cooke, who committed to Oregon State in September, added eight points and played a key role in St. Anthony’s 66-straight win.

“The Josh Brown-Halice Cooke backcourt is a very good one,” Hurley said. “In regards to that (the 66 wins in a row), I haven’t given it one second of thought.,” Hurley continued. “This group has 26 games to kind of figure out what we are good at.”

Senior Spencer Hubbard led Neptune with 12 points.
