Fall Jam Fest Weekend Recap

Young AAU programs flooded Hoop Group Headquarters this weekend for 2017’s Fall Jr Jam Fest. 50 teams of all different levels traveled from New York to Virginia to right here on the Shore to compete for the tournament’s seven division titles.

2017’s Jr Jam Fest began with an early tip-off at 8:30 AM Saturday morning with the 11, 12 and 13 U divisions. NJ Shoreshots Cavanaugh and Silverbacks set the tempo for the weekend with a close 35-40 tournament opener. The Silverbacks were able to clench the victory in the second half knocking down 8 foul shots to secure the win. Number 5 on Shoreshots kept it close knocking down 3 threes in the second half finishing with almost half the team’s points (15pt).

Foulshots proved their importance this weekend making the difference for Maryland’s Finest’s  afternoon victory over a strong K-Low Elite. After a physical 26 mins of play, Maryland’s Finest was able to pull out a one point victory with 28% of their final score from the foul line.

The excitement carried over to Jam Fest’s famous “Championship Sunday” with a 12 U Championship win off a buzzer beater three. With only seconds left on the clock, Silverbacks get the ball under High Rise Elite‘s basket, enough time for one push down court. High Rise is able to make a play and knock the ball free but after a strong effort, the ball is called out of bounds and the Silverbacks get one last chance. Despite High Rise’s tight defense, Chidi Nwigwe is able to break free and gets a shot off a quick release deep behind the arc for the win.

Player Standouts

Massai Graham | City Rocks NY | 13U

Standing 6’3, Graham towered over his competition this weekend. Graham is an athletic big able to run the floor, drive strong to the basket and finish at the rim. Graham turned heads finishing with six dunks in the semi final game against KSK and another in the championship with PSA Cardinals. Definitely a promising prospect.

RJ Green | PSA Cardinals | 14U

Green turned some heads this weekend with a his versatile performance. He works hard off the ball, is able to put himself in scoring position and makes big plays on the back end of the court.  Green kicked off the weekend with 11 pts in the second half against a strong MD United team.

Mason Piorkoski | NJ Playaz | 13U

Piorkoski lead the Playaz this weekend on a 2-0 run to the 14U Semi Finals. Mason is an impact player. Offensively, he has a good feel and plays as if the ball is on a string. He is explosive, can knock down shots from the corner and has a creative finish at the rim. On defense, he is quick on the ball. Player to look out for.

Derek Simpson | SJ Titans | 14U

Simpson is a pure point guard. As a 2022, he is able to command his offense and expose the lane by getting his teammates involved. Overall a crafty point with a strong drive and creative finish.

Justin Glover | City Rocks NY | 13U

Glover impressed the crowd this weekend with his ability to shoot the ball. Glover put up double digits in all three of his games, including his 16 pts in the CityRocks’ victory over NJ Playaz in the Championship. Able to keep the defense on their toes with his ability to mix it up and drive to the basket.

Devin Hasan | Shoreshots – Rice | 11U

Hasan was undeniably a standout. Standing no taller than 4 feet, he had the biggest impact on the court. Only 10 years old, Hasan commanded the floor, crossing players up, driving to the basket and hitting the outside jumper. Hasan lead his team to a 17 pt victory over a competitive NJ Racers team in the 11U Championship.

Chidi Nwigwe | Silverbacks | 12U

Chidi earned himself the 12U Division MVP for his buzzer beater game winner in the Championship against Shoreshots. Chidi was impressive all weekend, making good decisions on both ends of the court and shooting the lights out.

Isaac Santiago | PSA Cardinals | 14U

A key player for the Cardinals this weekend. Santiago ran the floor, was able to get into the lane and make plays at the rim. Does a good job of pushing the tempo of play and creating opportunities in transition. Santiago plays a big part on PSA defensive end.
