Philly Hoop Group Jam Fest Day 2 Recap

Saturday’s slate at the Philly Jam Fest was filled with both great individual performances and epic thrillers. Check out the best of the best from the 17u bracket here:

Team Loaded NC vs. Brooklyn Badgers

Saturday started off with a bang in the 17U bracket, with Team Loaded NC and the Brooklyn Badgers needing the entire 32 minutes to decide a winner. The game came down to the final 10 seconds with Loaded NC leading 52-50 and the Brooklyn Badgers holding for the last shot. 2014 guard JaQuel Richmond was able to knock the ball loose and hold on to the victory. Badgers guard Devyn Wilson hit four three-pointers and totaled 16 points in the losing effort.

LA Rockfish vs. NJ Roadrunners I

Travelling across the country didn’t slow down the LA Rockfish, as they took a 60-50 win against the NJ RoadRunners I in their first matchup on Saturday. 2014 guard Robert Cartwright led the way for LA Rockfish with 14 points, followed closely by 6-foot-10 2014 forward Thomas Welsh, who added 13 points to the cause.

The Rens vs. Maryland Ruff Riders

Another 17U that went down the final seconds, the Maryland Ruff Riders edged out Team Rens in a 78-76 bout. With 5.8 seconds left on the clock and Team Rens trailing by two points, Rens guard Tim Quashie missed a contested layup to end the game.

Mass Rivals vs. Team Next

Mass Rivals put the mercy rule on Team Next with an overall great performance in a 73-42 win. Four separate players scored in double-digits for Mass Rivals, including 2016 forward Goodluck Okonoboh (14 points), 2014 forward Matt Cimino (14), 2014 guard Kaleb Joseph (12) and 2014 forward Mike Auger (11).

DC Assault vs. Crusader Nation

Following a great performance last week at the Pitt Jam Fest, DC Assault guard and Maryland commit Romelo Trimble did it again, this time to the tune of 27 points. Trimble and fellow guard Byron Hawkins, who contributed 13 points to the cause, were able to escape a tough Crusader Nation squad that fought the entire way.

Bmore’s Finest vs. NYC Jayhawks

Baltimore’s Finest was able to walk away with a victory in their second game, despite a great performance by NYC Jayhawks’ 2014 guard Jayquan Holst, who scored a game-high 26 points. Baltimore’s Finest was able to combat the scoring attack with three double-digit scorers in 2014 forward Allen Costley (12 points), 2014 forward Dwayne Morgan (12) and 2014 wing Kyle Reilly (11).

Sports U Izod vs. Move Ur Feet

Sports U Izod, the Pitt Jam Fest champs remain in the hunt for the Philly Jam Fest crown behind two victories on Saturday, the second one coming against a tough Move Ur Feet team in a 64-49 win. 2014 guard Wade Baldwin was the leading point-scorer for Sports U Izod with 18 points, with 2014 forward Kenny Grant getting in the mix with nine points. They will play LA Rockfish on Sunday in the quarterfinals at Competitive Edge Sports at 9:30 AM.

Team Takeover Orange (DC) vs. Virginia Elite

Another game that goes down to the wire, another great finish between Team Takeover and Virginia Elite. With 1.8 seconds left in regulation in a tied ballgame, Virginia Elite inbounded the ball, but 2014 guard James Mitchell stole the lobbed pass. Mitchell, with less than a second left to play, threw up a shot that hit nothing but net, winning the game 63-60 for Team Takeover Orange.

So did Mitchell know it was going in?

“Yeah,” Mitchell said following the shot.” I walked over, after it left my hands, I walked over like it was going in. It looked like it was going in.”

DC Assault vs. Connecticut Select

The last game on Saturday, like so many before it, came down to the final seconds. Free throws were huge for DC Assault, as 2014 guards Romelo Trimble and Byron Hawkins went a combined 4-of-6 from the charity stripe to take a three-point lead with 2.4 seconds left. CT Select’s Tyshon Rogers got a three-quarter court shot up, but it fell short and DC Assault came away with the 63-60 victory. Trimble and 2014 forward Donte Grantham were the leading scorers for DC Assault, scoring a respective 21 points and 14 points. CT Select was fueled by 2013 forward Chaise Daniels’ 14 points and and 2014 guard Shane Christie’s 10.
