MSG Varsity

LONG BRANCH – Behind Brandon Federici’s 16 points Colts Neck held off a tenacious Long Branch team to escape with a 47-43 victory in the fourth and final game of the Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase at Long Branch High School.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Cougars (6-1). The Green Wave dropped to 4-5 with the loss.

Trailing 32-30 at the start of the fourth quarter Colts Neck turned the tide when Long Branch’s Izayah Irizarry was called for a foul and turned the ball over to the Cougars.

On the ensuing possession Tim Vangelas got to the line and sank two free throws to knot the game at 32-32.

After another Long Branch turnover Chris O’Reilly and Brandon Federici each nailed 3-pointers to put the Cougars in front 38-32.

“Finishing games this year has been a point of emphasis for us this year,” said Federici, who was named team MVP. “Today we did that.”

Even after opening a six-point lead the Cougars allowed the Green Wave to pull within one at 44-43 before Federici sank the game’s final three free throws to ice the game.

“At the end I feel it was our patience that made the difference,” Cougars coach Lou Piccola said. “It’s a good win, on the road, against a very tough and up and coming Long Branch team.”

The Green Wave’s Hassan Foster scored a game-high 17 points and was named team MVP.
