Fall League Showcases Shore’s Best Talent

The Hoop Group High School fall league is officially off and running, with the best boys and girls squads in the Shore Conference competing weekly at HGHQ in Neptune. After watching the boys Monday, one could immediately notice that the talent level in terms of Divison I prospects has risen since last season. There are always great stories coming out of the fall season and I will do my best to keep everyone updated; December 2 is a long way down the road before the real action starts.

On the girls’ side, there may be no bigger storyline than the development of Dana Carbone of Monsignor Donovan. Carbone did not play for one of the so called powerhouse teams the past 3 years, so it has been an uphill battle for her to catch the attention of college coaches. Dana Carbone had a very solid summer and did enough to make coaches want to see more. How many coaches saw her score 22 points and grab 11 rebounds vs. the Chambers Wildcats who are loaded with D1 talent? If you ask most D1 coaches who won the state championship, most would be surprised to know it was the Napolitano Wildcats led by the 5’11’ smooth Carbone.

dana carboneDana is clearly a kid on a mission. Her ball handling and passing skills have risen to a new level and she can score in so many ways at times it is mind blowing. What is even scarier is the talent that she is doing it against. Carbone hit jump shots, got to the rim, and most importantly used her new found foot speed to get in the open court. There is no question in a few weeks she is going to be in very high demand and college coaches are not going to believe the jump this young lady has taken.

As I’ve said before, Dana is one of the nicest kids I have ever been around. She is a coach’s dream because she understands what being a good teammate is about and knows that working together is the key to getting better. Watching her play at such a high level is a pleasure these days.

College coaches are invited to watch the action at HGHQ High School Fall League. For more information and schedule updates, check here.
