THE HOOP GROUP 2017 MOST IMPROVED PLAYER SHANNON McCOY/TEAM

Today the HOOP GROUP is proud to announce the 2017 MOST IMPROVED PLAYER and TEAM. This list has served as a launching pad for many players. The players on this  year’s list have much in common. Some have over come adversity and some have simply stepped up. Most importantly, this group elevated there teams and teammates to unexpected heights this season. This group  looks like a future ALL SHORE TEAM

BARNAGAT’S, SHANNON McCOY is the 2017 HOOP GROUP MOST IMPROVED PLAYER AWARD WINNER

2017 HOOP GROUP MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

Junior SHANNON McCOY of BARNAGAT  HIGH SCHOOL, is the first player from Ocean County to win the  prestigious  HOOP GROUP MOST IMPROVED PLAYER AWARD. The rise of Shannon McCoy may come as a surprise to most. But not to those who are paying close attention. Shannon McCoy is  rapidly becoming one of the best players in the Shore Conference. Her breakout season was a year of first, not just for her but for Barnegat High School as well.

Shannon McCoy is building a road map for future Ocean County girls. She is teaching them to get out of there comfort zone. While the recent talent boom in Ocean County has been impressive. Many players in the county have grown up playing against competition a step below Monmouth County. Most of the players train in lesser competitive environments. Shannon McCoy took a page out of the legendary Kelly Hughes training  manual. She decided to leave Ocean County and take a step up in competition with her training. Shannon McCoy stepped out of her comfort and took on the big girls. Right now, it’s looking like it has paid off.  Shannon McCoy, would be wise to invest in a few good pair of sunglasses these days…because her future is look very BRIGHT.

Last summer Shannon McCoy started showing up at HOOP GROUP and training. She caught my eye for two reasons. She showed SKILLS and an explosiveness that surprised me. I pride myself on knowing who the better players are in the Shore. But until recently, very rarely did I pay much attention to Ocean County. It’s most likely the reason I didn’t know Shannon McCoy. She was ultra competitive and clearly talented. But it really did not register with me until, her performance at the girls Spring Top 100 (http://nothingbutskills.com/shannon-mccoy-and-jane-mccauley-shine-bright/). When  she was one of the best players at the event. College coaches were all asking who she was. You see BARNAGET is not known for All Shore type talented kids….SHANNON McCOY is changing all that.

This past season was a season of first for BARNEGAT. They made there first SCT appearance and State appearance in schools history. They also won there first State game, while breaking the school record for wins in a season. None of this would  have been possible without SHANNON McCOY. From the moment the season started, till the end. Shannon McCoy announced there was a new  sheriff in town. BARNAGET which has been a growing programs over the years, took off  this season and Shannon McCoy took off with them.  It was McCoy who stats jumped in every category this season. This season Shannon McCoy had 8 double/doubles and averaged 15.7 and 8.3 rebounds. Her 25 points and 12 rebounds in the schools first state game allowed Barnegat to advance to the 2nd round. This performance summed up the entire season for both Barnegat and their star player. Shannon McCoy did not just elevate her game, but a entire program as well. Her coach TAMMY NICOLINI is in mix for Coach of THE YEAR and McCoy, Is the biggest reason why. When I asked what McCoy meant to her program, Coach Nicolini had this to say “her stats are a small blurb as to what she meant to this team and program”…say no more coach!

Shannon McCoy MVP of Holiday Tournament

Somebody asked me what level of college basketball, will Shannon McCoy play? My answer is, I don’t know. I don’t know how anyone can know at this point. Last fall was her first time training and playing against elite players on a regular bias. Her improvement over that time has been nothing short of amazing. She clearly brought that improvement to her high school season. Shannon McCoy dismantled Ocean County this season. But here is a dirty little secret, this past fall Shannon McCoy, did the same thing to some very talented Division one players as well. Her commitment to improvement was on full display this season. Barnegat High School reaped the benefits from her breakout season. My guess, is this is not the last we will be hearing about Shannon McCoy. There is zero question in my mind, that this is just a start, for this dedicated player. It’s why we are proud to say .. CONGRATS TO SHANNON McCOY  THE 2017 HOOP GROUP MOST IMPROVED PLAYER AWARD WINNER.

**Again I want to remind everyone, I take these awards very serious. While I cannot see every player, I understand the power of these such awards. I also understand some well derserving players may have been missed. I hope those players will use my slight as fuel in the future.

INTRODUCING THE 2017 HOOP GROUP MOST IMPROVED TEAM

THE 2017 HOOP GROUP MOST IMPROVED TEAM

RACHEL GAZZOLA- JUNIOR- HOWELL HIGH SCHOOL-5’10”- SWING

Nobody is laughing at Howell High School these days. Rachel Gazzola much like her teammates stepped up big time this year. She double her scoring average from a year ago, from 6.1 points a game to 13.1 points a game. She also found time to grab 5 rebounds a night. Gazzola has become a total gym gym and is now moving to elite status. She helped Howell go from go from 7 wins to 16 this past season. Howell also made a State and SCT appearance, where they surprised everyone with a shocking win over Donovan Catholic, in which Gazzola had 21 of the teams 44 points. Gazzola stock is rising it seems everyday. Her name will be on the lips of college coaches all summer.

MADDIE DORING-JUNIOR-ST. JOHN VIANNEY-6’0′-SHOOTING GUARD

If you don’t know, now you know. Maddie Doring is a future Division one lock. She spent the last two years watching from the sidelines, as part of one of the best teams in Shore history. But she learned her lessons well. Just ask Neptune and RBC because it was she who saved the day for SJV in the SCT. Doring seem to hit big shot after big shot all season for Coach Karpell. This is a player who saw limited playing time last year, to becoming a lethal weapon off the bench. She made a reputation this year for playing her best games against the biggest opponents. 15 points against National Christian, 13 points against Long Island Lutheran, 12 points against #10 Neptune, 12 points against #5 RBC…get the picture? Maddie Doring is on her way to superstardom and nothing appears to be able to stop her.

CHRISTINA ANONAKAKIS-HOLMDEL HIGH SCHOOL- 5’4″-POINT GUARD

The “magic woman” is back and she brought lots of new magic back. The former ALL FRESHMAN TEAM MEMBER, had 7 games of 20 points or more this season. She scored in double figures in every game this year with the exception of one. There is no need to discuss the leadership and defense, she brought to the table for Holmdel. Nobody predicted that Holmdel would be competitive this year. But Antonakakis willed her teammates into a surprise season. Antonakakis regained her status as one of the best point guards in New Jersey. Many are calling her the comeback kid. But I have news, for all… she never went anywhere. She averaged 14 points a game this year, proving she does whatever it takes for a team. Her ability to remain mentally tough and continue to develop her game, after a shocking season at RFH is a tribute to all who wish to be successful. There is a real case to be made for Antonakakis as The Most Improved Player in the Shore and the state….SPECIAL PROPS MUST GO TO COACH DOUG SHAW!

SAJADA BONNER-ST. JOHN VIANNEY-SOPHOMORE-5’11”-SWING

Last season she was playing JV basketball. This is season she started for the SCT finalist and Top five ranked SJV. She will be one of the most in demand players in New Jersey one day. She is a total gym rat, with a real appetite for improvement. She has improved almost every aspect of her game this year. It’s why, it led to some special nights. Her play in the SCT was electric as  JA- MONEY buried big jumpers to down #10 ranked Neptune in her double figure scoring performance. She then backed that up with a show stopping performance against RBC with a 16 points and 7 rebounds in the SCT semi Final. She averaged just under 10 points this season playing against the best competition in all of New Jersey. Sajada Bonner has the ability to one day, be the best player in the Shore Conference. This season she gave us a real glimpse into the future.
