From Summer Basketball Camp to NCAA Basketball Shaq Stokes Commits to Hawaii

Seemingly every time this year another Lincoln graduate is announcing their intention to play college basketball for the school of their choice the following year.

This year it’s senior Shaquille Stokes turn.

Stokes will be attending the University of Hawaii next season. Stokes received interest from a number of schools including UNLV, TCU, Iowa, Hofstra, Penn St, and Colorado St.

Shaq Stokes“It’s going to be a new experience for me and my family,” Stokes the Brooklyn native said of going to Hawaii.

Stokes is the prototypical tough New York city guard. “[New York City guards have] a will to win. We’ll do anything necessary whether it’s getting teammates involved or score.”

Although Stokes will be entering his freshman year, he wants to bring his leadership to the Warriors. “I want to be a great leader on the floor for Coach Arnold,” Stokes knows it might not be instantaneous, “I’ll wait for my time and whatever coach needs me to do, I’ll do.”

Although Stokes doesn’t know too much about Hawaii besides watching his favorite TV show Hawaii 5-0, he’s watched a few Hawaii games into the wee hours of the night on the east coast and is excited about the great atmosphere.

Stokes was a tireless worker during summer camps at Hoop Group. Last summer he was named a Top 20 All-Star at Elite camp. “Hoop Group has always showed me a lot of love. They helped more colleges see me against the best competition in the country at camp.”

He’ll miss Lincoln, Coach Morton, the good pizza, and everything about New York but he’s excited to start the next chapter of his life.

“Thanks to my family, Coach Morton, and the whole athletic family at Lincoln.”

We congratulate Shaq on fulfilling his dream to play college basketball and wish him the best of luck in his future on the Big Island.
