Although it won’t be the same opponent, Berks Catholic will look to avenge last year’s loss in the Reading Tip Off Showcase this Friday night at Albright College. The Saints, who fell to Chester last year by a score of 69-62, will look to get back on track in Reading against Constitution High School.

After a 19-11 regular season last year, BC will have to find a way to win without Conor Jack (last year’s tip off MVP) and Emmanuel Lacey, two seniors who were top scorers for the program last season, and have since moved on from the program. One possibility to help fill the scoring for the Saints is Tyrone Nesby. A junior, Nesby had a very strong showing in the loss to Chester in Reaing a year ago. Senior Marc Rivera is also an upperclassmen who will be leaned on to lead his team, especially in the paint. Rivera sat down with us for a ‘Q and A’ session leading up to the showcase.

Q: What’s your goal for this season?

My goal for the season is to bring back the county championship to BC.

Q: How have you prepared for this season?

My main things I like to do is watch videos. I watch a lot of footage on YouTube from old post players like Olajuwon, Barkley, and Malone to learn new moves and how they became successful on the block.

Q: What is the key for a successful season?

Team chemistry and hard work. If you can combine the two, regardless of your size or athletic ability, good results will follow.

Q: Are you and your teammates excited about the competition in the Hoop Group Tip-Off Showcase?

Constitution is obviously a great team. I believe they actually won the state title in single A last year. However, that’s what you want as a basketball player, you want the chance to go against some of the best in your state.

Q: Your favorite player to watch is?

Well my favorite player is Lebron James. However, my favorite players to actually watch are the big man combo of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph because I copy my game similar to theirs.

Berks Catholic will play Constitution this Friday, at 6:30 pm at Albright College in Reading, PA. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.
