Hun Hangs on to Beat Hackensack at Tip-Off Hoop Group Showcase

West Orange, NJ – Jake Newman scored 18 points and Joshua McGilvray and Fergus Duke netted 12 apiece as Hun topped Hackensack 56-51 in the first game of the day at the Tip-Off Hoop Group Showcase being played at West Orange High School.

Hun (6-2) improved to 4-3 all-time in the Hoop Group event while Hackensack (1-1), which was led by Rashard Figures’ 14 points, dropped their inaugural Showcase game.

“We really have a great team,” said Newman, who was named the game’s MVP, “we have a number of guys who can score in double digits every night.”

While Hun controlled the pace of the game for most of the night, Hackensack wouldn’t go away and actually pulled even at 38-38 when Jason Smith (6-4/2014) finished a layup off a crisp pass from Chris Myers (5-10/2013).

“Their pressure made us speed up our tempo,” Newman said. “At the end of the third coach said we were better than this and we had to regroup.”

“I told our defense we had to step up,” Hun head coach Jonathon Stone said. “For a while there we fell into what they wanted us to do as opposed to what we knew we
could do.”
