Mater Dei Ready for Showdown in Long Branch

Mater Dei Prep is facing Neptune this Saturday in the Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase. Mater Dei will be looking to get back on track after coming up short against Pope John yesterday. Junior Forward Elijah Barnes is showing great promise in the early stages of the season. Playing for his third school in three seasons, Barnes has seemed to gel nicely at Mater Dei, averaging a solid 12 points and 6 rebounds through his first four games.

Barnes has high hopes for this year’s Mater Dei squad, as he told “My goal for this season is to win the Shore Conference.” He has also been making tremendous strides to ensure this goal is attained.

“I’ve hit the weight-room, worked on my shooting daily,” Barnes said. But that’s not all, he has been focusing heavily on the mental aspect of the game as well. “I have been watching a lot of basketball. Just to gain more knowledge of the game to help me throughout the season” Barnes told us.

When asked how he and the team look to achieve this success, Barnes was very straight forward. “The key to success is defense” he said. This is evident through Barnes’ play, as he is averaging over two blocks per game, proving that he is a stellar interior defender.

He is also looking forward to this weekend, as he feels that it will give Mater Dei a chance to showcase their skill to the public. “We’re all excited to play in the Hoop Group showcase because it gives us a chance to show everyone what kind of team we have” he said. He also hinted that he and his team may be looking to make a statement. “We work hard everyday in the gym and want to show everyone that we are not to be taken lightly.”
