Garner Road 71, Team Loaded NC 47

Team Loaded NC hit a brick wall and couldn’t keep up with Garner Road in the 17U semifinals, as Garner Road took away a 71-47 win to advance to the championship.

2014 wings Marcus Bryan and Jordan Lucas led the way for Garner Road, scoring a combined 26 points in the victory. 2013 forward Ashley Williams added eight points, while 2014 guard Mitron Terry contributed seven points.

Team Loaded NC was paced by 2014 forward Cody Martin, who scored a team-high 11 points. Cody’s twin brother, Caleb, added eight points and 2014 forward Zane Waterman tallied nine points.

Even without highly regarded 2014 wing Isaac Copeland, Garner Road was in control throughout the game and held a lead of over 20 points halfway through the second half.

The level and high intensity of their play was evident throughout for Garner Road, even as the clock winded down and, with the team holding steady on their 20-point lead, the victory appeared more and more in hand.

The big lead was highlighted by a big slam courtesy of 2014 guard Jaylon Jones, who threw down a vicious dunk to put Garner Road up 68-44 with less than three minutes to play.

DC Assault 60, Sports U IZod 58

DC Assault has its fingerprints all over the Southern Jam Fest, most notably in the 17U winners bracket. A 60-58 heart-pounding win over Sports U IZod (NJ) has Assault playing in the championship against Garner Road.

2014 guard Melo Trimble led all scorers with a 26-point performance. 2014 Deonte Grantham followed with a 12-point showing, while 2014 guard Byron Hawkins hit three shots from beyond the arc for 11 points.

Sports U didn’t have a big scorer, but was carried by a great overall team performance. 2014 guard Tarin Smith led the team with 10 points, while fellow 2014 guard Jared Hall added eight points.

Sports U, trailing by 10 points in the second half, mounted a comeback with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Then, with the team trailing by only four points with just over two minutes left in the semifinal, Jared Hall drained a three-pointer to bring the deficit to one point. But Deonte Grantham immediately answered with an and-one on the other end of the court to bring it back to a four-point game.

2014 guard Hakim Saintil hit a contested layup to bring the lead down to two, but Trimble was fouled and hit one of two free throws to take a three-point lead. Hall hit one of two free throws on the other end to bring it to two points.

A steal off the inbound pass gave Sports U a chance to tie the game, but a Wade Baldwin miss was corralled by Trimble, who calmly hit two free throws to put the game out of reach.
