Say Hello To My Little Friend, Montana

Montana Mayfield isn’t a highly touted prospect.

Mayfield, a 5’10” point guard in the class of 2012 and a senior-to-be at Philly’s Roman Catholic High School, has a reputation for being a steady, sure-handed point guard that knows how to run a basketball team. The lefty has a strong, tight handle and the quickness to get into the lane against just about any defender, but, according to ESPN’s recruiting profile, Mayfield “definitely more of a pass first player.”

Montana Mayfield willed his team to victory against favored team Baltimore Elite to advance NJ ABC out of pool play.

He certainly didn’t appear that way on Saturday afternoon, as Mayfield scored 31 points to lead Team NJABC to an 80-71 win over the Baltimore Panthers.

Making Mayfield’s performance all the more impressive is that it came against Aquille Carr, a top 50 point guard in the class of 2013. Carr still managed to score 21 points in the loss, but the majority of those came late in the game.

For Mayfield, going up against a talent like Carr makes him play better.

“It makes you want to play harder,” Mayfield said. “It makes you want to attack him. You respect him, but at the same time you don’t want to let him know that you have respect for him, so you go at him.”

Its part of the reason Mayfield looks forward to coming to Hoop Group events.

“You play against the best people. I get to show everybody what I can do,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield recently picked up an offer from Rice, and lists Virginia Tech and Siena as the schools he is the most interested in.
