We here at the Hoop Group are ready for another great weekend of AAU Basketball after a stellar Spring Jam Fest and Jr. Jam Fest last weekend. If the teams can produce the energy and intensity that we got just five days ago, we are definitely going to have an excellent weekend!

11:23PM — Friday night offered a great preview of what is to come for the rest of the weekend here at Southern Jam Fest. We saw a triple-overtime game, some notable upsets, a few fierce rivalries renewed, and a number of high-level prospects assert themselves on Day 1. Thanks to all who followed along with today’s live blog. We will be back bright and early at 8:30 AM with our live Saturday coverage. –@Edgar_Walker

11:17PM- Castle Athletics was led by Elijah Frater’s 10-point effort on their way to defeating Team Melo 57-52 in one of the last games of the night. Along with Frater’s shooting, the key play of the game came with just under 50 seconds remaining when Wayne Weir (2014) made a huge steal which stemmed a potential Melo run. “We just have to stay focused on each game,” said Weir, who finished with eight points. —@pfebbraro

10:15 PM — Thon Maker (2016) and younger brother Matur Maker (2017)(both directly below) combine to form possibly the biggest, most intriguing front line of this year’s Southern Jam Fest field. Thon was dominant in the first half against an outmatched Wayne PAL team (wearing the colorful jerseys you can see further below), while Matur impressed in his time off the bench. Wayne PAL had no answers for the duo when they shared some time together on the floor midway through the first half.

10:02PM- Team Loaded-804 defeated HC Dream Team (MD) 70-66 in overtime to advance to the second round of the 17u bracket. Chief Amoah (2015) converted a traditional 3-point play with 7.5 seconds remaining in regulation to put Team Loaded in front 60-59 before HC Dream Team’s Jermaine Head (2015) forced overtime by sinking a free throw with 4.2 seconds on the clock. Amoah would finish with 13 points and 14 assists while LoLami Charles (2014) led HC Dream Team with 17 points. —@pfebbraro

9:40PM- You know what comes next! Loaded was quick to pounce on their opponent in Overtime, sealing the win and moving on #WinSouthern

8:57 PM — Back-to-back 17U games came down to the wire. Higher Level outlasted Squires Richmond, 64-60, in a game that was close from start to finish. Jedon Young (2015) had a huge game for Higher Level, drawing praise from over a dozen media members and scouts watching on the baseline.

Just a few minutes later, Richmond Metro Gold pulled off the tournament’s biggest upset to this point, taking down Sports U, 64-61. A deep three-pointer from Brandon Holley (2015) with four seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner for Richmond Metro.

8:43PM – Jashawn Brooks’ (2015) 16-point effort helped the Southern Kings (GA) top Wayne PAL (Halewicz) 61-59 in 17u First Round action. Twelve of Brooks’ 16 points came from behind the arc.
In an earlier game in the 17u bracket, BWSL-Williams routed Ohio Varsity Blue 68-25. BWSL’s Chris Clarke netted 15 in the win. —@pfebbraro
